1. Sparkles

I go through phases of obsessively cleaning my jewelry to months of thoughtless neglect as cooking, cleaning and everyday life build up a nasty grime atop my wedding rings. Typically, when I go to my parents’ house to visit I ask my mom to clean them for me (what am I, four?) because she has the best jewelry cleaning solution.

    Please disregard the dying flowers.

I finally asked her what’s in this stuff because it is, seriously, the best jewelry cleaning solution I’ve ever seen. It cleans my rings better than most professional jewelers have. It’s especially better than that one jeweler in the mall that cleaned them for me for free and turned them blue. Yes, BLUE. Right before my wedding. Eesh, I digress.

Anyway. It’s a simple, though smelly, recipe that won’t turn your jewelry blue.

Get a jar of some sort. I user a mason jar because I have a few dozen of them laying around.

    Fill it with:

    • 1/3 water
    • 1/3 liquid laundry detergent
    • 1/3 ammonia

That’s it. The longer you let it soak, the better, but even just a few minutes will do. I usually try to do it overnight. Then, when you take them out, scrub them a little with an old toothbrush to get the aforementioned grime out of the cracks (please tell me your rings get this nasty, too. Is it just me?), and that’s it. You’ll be amazed that you forgot how much they sparkle.

Let me know how it works for you if you try it.
